Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is an ideal location for sailing, especially between the months of April and October. The most renowned sailing clubs can be found in the capital, which marks the yearly starting point for the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC). On the south coast, we would highlight the marinas of Puerto Rico, Pasito Blanco, Arguineguin and Puerto de Mogán.
All these locations have schools able to offer courses and equipment hire. If you needed further proof of Gran Canaria’s sailing credentials, it’s worth noting that its clubs have produced numerous Olympic champions over the years.
The island is considered one of the best windsurfing locations in the world. As well as windsurfing along the entire eastern coastline, Playa de las Canteras and the Gáldar coast also offer excellent conditions.
On the Pozo Izquierdo beach, where winds can reach 60km/h, and also on Playa de Vargas, you can marvel at the skills of actual windsurf champions taking part in the
two trials of the PWA World Cup that are staged on the island.
We advise beginners to remain in the protected areas of Puerto Rico and Mogán.
The northern reaches of the island, between the capital and the Gáldar coast, is the undisputed hotspot for surfing and bodyboarding. Uninterrupted winds serve up ideal conditions, with waves reaching heights of up to 5m.
We would also single out the excellent surfing conditions on the Arinaga coast, Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas.
There are a range of companies from which you can rent all the equipment you need.
Gran Canaria has two hyperbaric chambers located to the north and south of the island.
Don’t forget to visit the El Cabrón Marine Reserve, Pasito Blanco and, for more experienced divers, La Isleta and Sardina.
Gran Canaria has a wide range of companies offering deep-sea sport fishing. The best ports to set sail from are Mogán, Pasito Blanco and Puerto Rico, which have set a combined total of over 50 world records. Among the many fish to be reeled in, we would highlight tuna, blue marlin, swordfish and occasionally sharks.
